Back in 2017, a popular musical named Six was published, telling the story of the six wives of Henry VIII. In that musical, there was a song called the Haus of Holbein, where they mentioned wearing corsets and cinchers. This caused a swarm of TikToks to come in with people wearing corsets to reenact this particular part of the song.
Corsets, as we know, are not supposed to be worn without caution, as they can be uncomfortable and potentially injure you. So in this article, I will be explaining how to safely wear a corset, so if you plan to wear a corset the next time, you can wear it without injuring yourself.
First things first
The first thing you should do before getting a corset is to know your plan. What do you plan to achieve with this corset? What is your end goal? Once you know this, you can choose your corset meant for the function you want. It is also important to make sure you get the right size and fabric to ensure maximum comfort.
Quality over pricing
Corsets may be expensive, but if there is one thing you need to know, it’s that you need to choose a corset of good quality, meaning one that feels sturdy, is made with good, thick materials, and can last long. Corsets are like bras, if the quality is bad not only will it look bad, it won’t be very comfortable either. you don’t waste your money buying many bad quality corsets only for the outcome to be bad. If you’re buying a corset online, make sure to do thorough research on the brand, the corset itself, and don’t forget to check the reviews.
Choose what’s best for you
You may want the corset that you see everyone wear, or you may want to wear the type of corset you see people wear in the Victorian age, but the truth is, no one corset fits all. There are many types of corsets that exist, and this means there is a type of corset to suit everyone. You will need to choose the best corset that suits you. It may not be the corset you initially wanted, but it’s better to find the corset that actually fits you rather than injuring yourself with a corset that doesn’t fit you at all.
Make sure it doesn’t hurt
It is normal to feel tightness when wearing a corset as it is constricting your middle section, but what isn’t good is if you feel other types of discomfort or you feel pain when wearing the corset. It’s one thing to feel tightness when wearing a corset, it’s another thing to feel pain when wearing one. If you find you feel other types of discomfort or pain when wearing a corset, you should take the corset off. You should adjust the tightness or type of corset you wear if this is consistently happening.
Take it slow
A common mistake people make is that they pull the corset to a ridiculously tight setting, which is potentially harmful. While you want to look good in your outfit, it is important that you let yourself get used to it first. A few days before your big day, slowly adjust yourself to the corset. Wear the corset and tighten the lace, but make sure not to pull it completely tight. Keep the corset on for 1-2 hours then take it off.
Since you’re just starting to wear a corset it is better to wear it for short periods of time for a few days. The corset will mould to your body, and during the big day you can tighten it to the setting you want without too much discomfort. This will make sure you get used to it without injuring yourself. Think of this like running. You cannot immediately run 10 miles in the beginning, you need to consistently run short distances every day until you are able to run 10 miles a day so you don’t injure yourself.
Seasoning
What does seasoning mean in terms of corsets? It’s actually the period of adjustment. Like I mentioned before, you cannot wear a corset and tighten it to ridiculously tight settings right away. Earlier it was a short term method for if you have a big day, but in the long term, you can do it too. Like earlier, you put on the corset and tighten it, but not too tightly. Wear it for about 1-2 hours a day then take it off. Do this for a few days so your body can adjust. After that you can increase 30 minutes a day, then after a few weeks you can wear it for 8 hours or more. This seasoning will help make sure you don’t injure yourself when wearing a corset.
Take a break
It’s a good idea to take breaks in the middle of wearing the corset, especially when you’re beginning the seasoning process. Of course consistency is key but there are times when you need to rest so you can achieve your result safely. You can take 30 minutes of break then wearing it again in the beginning, then you can take around an hour of break then wearing it again later on.
DON’T EXERCISE
Don’t get me wrong, exercising is good, but exercising in a corset is very bad for you. It isn’t recommended to exercise in a corset since most corsets are sort of rigid to make the hourglass figure possible. Exercising in a corset may injure you, which is something you wouldn’t want. If you plan to exercise, then take your corset off to exercise.
Eat properly
You won’t have much of an appetite when you wear a corset due to the constriction, but you need to make sure you eat enough to get enough nutrients for your body. You also can’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
Hopefully with this guide, you will be able to safely wear a corset without injuring yourself. Remember, wearing a corset is like running, it needs to be consistent and in safe and controlled amounts so you don’t injure yourself reaching your goal.
